Rhythmic Robot’s RX5 is a meticulous recreation of Yamaha’s mid-80s flagship drum machine, the RX5. The original RX5 headed Yamaha’s lineup of drum machines and was very advanced for its time, boasting 12-bit sampled sounds, multiple outputs with trim, comprehensive editing including sample-reverse, and 24 onboard sounds. It was, however, costly, and not all that easy to program compared to Roland’s competing units, which makes it a bit of a cult classic now. It featured heavily on Prince’s Sign o the Times, Madonna’s La Isla Bonita, Cameo’s Word Up (where if forms the backbone of the whole song) and many hits by The Pet Shop Boys.
